His appearance doesn’t tell you a bit about the steely determination that he wears. Meet young Achyutanand Sahu, the young weightlifter from Orissa who picked up a couple of gold medals and a silver in the 62kg category at the commonwealth weightlifting Championships which is currently on atCape Town,South Africa.

The 17-year-old, whose parents struggle to make both ends meet, bagged two gold and a silver in the 62kg weight category to put his village on the world map. It was sheer determination at display when the poor chap defied poeverty  and unfavourable situations to  lift the title atCape Town.

The locals in the nondescript Manipura village erupted in joy after the success of the local boy.

“We are poor people. I never dreamed that my son would travel abroad and make us proud. I am very happy. I have no words to describe,” Bairagi Chandra Sahoo, father of the gold medal winner, said.

“I have four children, Achyut is the eldest. The crop return has not been enough to make both ends meet. Thus, to augment the income, I run a small grocery shop,” added the proud father.

Achyutananda’s mother was also jubilant at her son’s success. And as there are awards pouring in from every nook and corner, the days of ordeal seem to be over for the family of the young sportsperson.

It is now upto the government to nurture this young talent and provide hime with the right ambience fopr his talent to flourish.

The most expensive player of the Orissa premier league (OPL) has proved his worth once again by continuing to impress everybody with his for. Back after scoring the first century in the OPL, Biplab Samantray became the first player in the history of OPL to take a Hat-trick.

Adjudged, man of the match, Biplab Samantray contributed with the willow too by scoring 44 of 24 balls. The innings was studded with four sixes and two fours. Fuelled with the all-round display of the youngster, the Katak Barabati team defeated Bhubaneswar jaguars by 11 runs in the match.

Set to chase 130 by the Katak Barabati Tigers, the Bhubaneswar Jaguars were cruising steadily towards victory with 103 for the loss of three wickets in the 16th over. But then Biplab struck dismissing Santosh Shetty, Avinash Bhuyian and Priyabrata Pradhan of three successive deliveries to ensure victory for his side.

Earlier when the Tigers batted, it was again Samantray who defied the Bhubaneswar Jaguar’s bowlers where spinner Sukanta Hati stood out with a brilliant spell of 4-0-36-4.Save Samantray, None of the other players of Katak team could handle him. He was well supported by Jayanta Behera.

Biplab Samantray, the skipper of Katak Barabati Tigers and also the most expensive player of this year’s OPL broke a jinx as he became the first batsman in the ongoing OPL to score a century. Biplab smashed a blistering 109 of just 63 balls to edge out Kashvi Power Rangers Keojhar.The cameo innings was studded with eleven fours and four sixes. The heroic innings also ensured that Katak Barabati record their fourth straight win in the tournament.

The time Biplab arrived at the crease, the Tigers were struggling with two wickets gone with no runs scored. Biplab however produced a memorable innings to ensure that his team maintains the lead in the tournament. The captain while heaping praise on his bowlers stated that he would like to concentrate on one game at a time and that he would like to keep his pace going in their next match aginst the Baleswar Baghas.

OPL T20 kicked off to a Colorful Start

The time has arrived when Orissa and its cricket loving fans can now boast of an indigenous domestic cricket league. The inaugural ceremony of the Orissa Premier League (OPL) T20 kicked off to a colorful start at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on 22nd June 2011, redefining the way cricket is being played in Orissa.The biggest-ever sports extravaganza in Odisha began with the cultural programs, musical shows.

As the sun went down and the sapping heat of the summers gave way to cool breeze, the Barabati Stadium went live with waves of colorful lights floating all around. Lasers flickered conjuring images and crackers burst in tandem to rock the venue which showcased the beginning of a new era in the sporting history of Orissa.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by many top Cricketing officials of the Orissa Cricket Association along with top rung politicians and multitude of Cricket fans. All ten teams with their players, support staff, brand ambassadors and other cultural troops took part in the parade across the stadium, much to the delight of the crowd. Donning their team colors, the players were greeted by the capacity crowd of Barabati as they paraded around the stadium.

The cricket-loving crowd in Odisha cheered all teams that took part in the parade with their flags and logos. Several top Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) officials, including Secretary Ashirbad Behera and former Indian Cricket Manager Ranjib Biswal were present at the inauguration ceremony. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Badri Narayan Patra and Barabati MLA Debashish Samantray also attended the OPL inauguration.

The first match of the OPL was later held between the Katak Barabati tigers and Bhubaneswar Jaguars.

Orissa’s own cricket razzmatazz, the Orissa Premier League (OPL)begins inthe Barabati Stadium of cuttack from today! The Katak Barabati Tigers take on Bhubaneswar Jaguars in the inaugural match. But before that, spectators in the Barabati Stadium will be treated to a spectacular laser show followed by a grand display of fireworks.

The Orissa Cricket Association has done everything to ensure that the event is attended in large numbers. The stage is also set for promotingthe cultural heritage of Orissathrough the OPL.In this endeavor, popular artistes from all parts of the state will perform at the inaugural function . A few artistes from outside the state will also perform in the event.

Presence of a large number of actors from Ollywood will also be a attracting crowds .Anubhav Mohanty, the brand ambassador of OPL will add attraction to the cricket carnival.

The first of its kind, Orissa Prmier League will be an event that will involve 140 players and ten different teams. The competition is due to be over on June 12th.

The costliest player of the first season of OPL is also the captain of Katak Barabati Tigers! Biplab Samantray who was bought by Katak team for a whopping Rs. 4, 60,000 is a right-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler. The player made an impressive first-class debut, scoring a half-century for Orissa in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group-B match against Baroda at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on November 1, 2010 is much sought after player in the domestic circuits. Biplab Samantaray has also lead the Orissa side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali all-India knock-out T20 tournament to be held in Hyderabad from March 12 to 16, will lead the Katak Barabati tigers Team.

The Orissa cricket Assocaition (OCA) declared that the popular Oriya actor Anubhav Mohanty would be the Brand Ambassador for the upcoming Orissa Premier League (OPL). The actor was roped in owing to his popularity and ability to draw crowds. The young actor took time to thank the OCA . “OPL is a good platform to promote cricket in the state.I hope it provides the game to surge and spread all across the state. I am looking forward to the tournament with great interest,,” Mohanty stated

The dream of having Orissa’s own Cricket League got more realistic as the Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) unveiled the top 10 bidders from across the state that will own individual team for the first edition of the T-20 extravaganza. The ten teams that would feature in the Orissa Premier League (OPL) are Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore, Berhampur, Puri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Rourkela and Jagatsinghpur.

Team Bhubaneswar got the highest bid amount of Rs 54,99,999.It was bought by LG Infrastructure Limited. The table below shows the other teams of the mega event and their owners.

The bidding process was participated by corporate and individuals alike. Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) had sold a total of 138 forms from interested bidders out of which 97 were selected and finally 10 highest bidders were finalized to own a team in the first edition of OPL.A base price of Rs 8 Lakhs was fixed for each team and multiple bids were received for a single team. The Orissa Premier League starts from May 22 2011.

The player’s auction will be next item on the menu of events towards hosting of the first OPL. The auction is scheduled to start on May 13th and franchise owners have to choose a minimum of six players each from a pool of players graded as A, B, C, D and E. A player graded in List A would cost the owner Rs 60,000, in List B Rs 50,000, in List C Rs 30,000, in Grade D Rs 20,000 and in Grade E Rs 10,000.

The Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) proposes to hold 44 matches in the first OPL. The winner would take away a prize money of Rs 4 lakh while the runners up will team would get Rs 2 lakh. The inaugural match on May 22, the semifinals and the final would be played at the Barabati stadium.

Telecast rights of the much hyped event has been bagged by Bangalore-based Das Capital Management and Advisors Private Limited for a fee of Rs 10 lakh. The firm is negotiating with a couple of state and national sports channels for live telecast of matches.

With the just concluded biddings which were not only remarkable but also spectacular, the OCA has moved a step further in its objective of creating the right environment for cricket in the state. Hopefully the OPL will serve as the breeding ground for cricketing talents in Orissa.
